Helping the Hungry

Kids participating in the Vacation Bible School “Galactic Blast” and program attendees gave $300, which will provide over 2 tons of food to assist hungry families in the Commerce area.  The children also brought in enough shelf-stable foodstuffs to fill up the back of a pick up truck.  The funds will be used to buy food at 14 cents per lb. from the North Texas Food Bank (NTFB).  All food items will be distributed through the Commerce Food Distribution and Manna Movers operated by the Word of Life Family Church.

A startling reminder is that Texas has the highest rate of childhood hunger and the second-highest rate of hunger overall in the nation, according to NTFB.

Let’s continue pursuing a hunger-free community by dropping dollar bills into the offering plate or writing a check with Commerce Food Distribution in the memo line.  Remember, one dollar buys 7 lbs. of food from NTFB.  You can also volunteer with the Commerce Food Distribution or Manna Movers by calling Julie Gentle at 903-886-6893/817-975-3990 (cell).

M&M- Missions and More:

M&M: Missions and More, our Wednesday after-school program for children in kindergarten through 6th grade, is a perfect example.  This program is free and offered to ANY child who wish to attend.  We offer pick-up at Commerce schools, but we have children attending who are home-schooled and who attend school in neighboring towns.  In this program, children are immersed in the mission of service to God – all year long.  By participating in M&M, these children are learning that God has blessed EVERYONE with wonderful, meaningful ways to give, serve, and share with others.

M&M is also a “Connect” program.  Many of our kids do not have a “Church Home”, a regular place of worship.   Through M&M children are connecting with God as they set about the business of hearing and answering His call to help those in need.  They feel His presence in their lives as they experience the joy their gifts bring to others.   They learn to connect with each other through their collaborative efforts and through fellowship.  M&M provides the paths that we pray will lead them back to church – and to God – over and over for the rest of their lives.

So, what else do the M&Mers have in store for the rest of the year?  A few of the projects we have on the docket for the spring include: Relay For Life; partnering with Manna Movers in a food drive; and Easter Gift Baskets for seniors – and a visit to Country Homes Estates Assisted Living  Facility, just to name a few.
